Restless, Helpless

it starts with wandering thoughts
here it is; panic creeps in
flooding like a hurricane.
my throat gets tight; i can't breathe;
my heart, it pounds like a drum.
then i feel it in my gut
and i know what i'm in for:
‘nother restless, helpless night
stuck inside of my own head.
took a pill but still i can't
turn down the sounds and voices.
they scream for me to notice.
i plug my ears, hope for sleep,
it doesn't come, can't succumb
so i write this poem in bed
restless; helpless once again.
