Notes About The Poem

The Night Before the Battle, 1865 by James Henry Beard, Ekphrasis

Resting Up

resting up
breathing in and out
cards folded up
all’s quiet
silence is deafening
dreams are deep
coffee’s steep
grounds heavy
not a peep
except for in and out
through nostrils and mouth
the count is loud
brave, grave
dreams last
until a blast
of a brash trumpet
clash of night’s skeleton sentinel
and day’s nightmarish gore
waking up
to close one’s eyes once more

You did a fine job interpreting the painting Kim, (I looked it up) You wonder what's going through their minds. Tom🌹

The clipped lines and recurring “up” give the poem a rhythmic stillness, echoing the soldiers’ breathing and uneasy rest. “Brave, grave” compresses courage and mortality into a striking pairing, while the final line turns waking into a haunting anticipation of death.

Could actually feel that breathing, Kim. So well written... And that last line could go two completely different ways, ala the 639,000 or so whose eyes never closed at night again anymore... The Civil War, when all is said and done, was perhaps the war to end all wars -- except it didn't. Gotta write something about this tonight. Thanks for opening my eyes and heart to it again. ~ gw

And just in time for Halloween! Hey Darlin', how 'bout a cup of Joe? I dug the flow, it really made me glow! Would you like a little cream in that? Non-fat.
