Respect

Earning the respect of those who have yet to
learn the meaning of the word,
Who play with a ball that is too hard,
Using words that only discourage,
Still lacking the courage,
To admit they need help to change,
   their attitude,
So they can be seen as a cool dude,
Before they are seen as a lost cause,
Giving those around them, just cause to leave,
Is something we should expect of ourselves,
If we care to remember our former selves.

Yes, as in your last line "if we care to remember our former selves." Humbled by where we used to be before our eyes were opened to a better attitude and a better life. Good poem, David. Moon Harp
