Residue
"Whip 'em into line!",
an old phrase but still
sometimes heard.
In my lifetime,
usually applied to
recalcitrant children,
but in these politically correct times,
used less and less.
But, I think often times
still thought.
I remember how easily
it was once said
and wonder at the brutality
it implies and still does,
this residue of slavery.
How long it takes,
for history,
to relieve ourselves
of our burdens,
yet wonder at our violence.
It is always there lurking in our
rhetoric
