Resemblance

I have my mother's eye color.
In 1930, when she was seventeen,
an admirer in Prague told her: "Young lady, you have
such a wonderful gaze—reminiscent of chamomile."
Indeed—yellow-brown irises
like the heart of that simple blossom.
And yet, somewhere deep behind them
I carry that defenseless, wistful tenderness
of my father’s pale blue eyes.
Just a tiny fragment of a forgotten
sky...

The free verse moves gently from remembered conversation to intimate reflection, allowing the resemblance to deepen beyond eye colour into inherited tenderness. The chamomile and forgotten sky imagery beautifully unite both parents in the speaker, while the brief final line leaves a lingering sense of vulnerability and love.

Thanks… Despite having very different personalities, my father was an introvert and my mother, an extrovert, my parents shared a beautiful relationship. Mom passed away at 74 from breast cancer; she suffered greatly. Dad cared for her with selfless devotion. I often stayed up all night by her side, then took an early morning train—a 50 km journey—from my hometown to Bratislava to host a live radio broadcast. Dad died at 87 following a fall; fortunately, he did not suffer for long. I often dream about them...❤️
