Remembering the Present

I have become lethargic,
Barely able to lift a care,
This outer body feeling,
Just kind of floating here…

My mind is in overdrive,
Wheels spinning at will,
Outside looking in,
Wondering if it is real…

I take a step back,
Placing one foot in front of the other,
I am pushed out to the front,
These pressures and burdens will smother…

I have lost my way in life,
Time and time again,
But I get right back on track,
And end up right back where I’ve been…

I keep keeping on,
It is what it is,
I am good at playing this game,
It is the life I live…

But when the time comes,
I will put it all away,
I will remember all I’ve done,
And live in the present day…

You speak so clearly Evets. Sometimes existing is the best we can do. Existing with dignity is sometimes the best you can hope for when we are outta the game for awhile. I love the line from a tv show,,,life's tough wear a helmut. I really enjoy reading your poetry. Laurie

I was a reservist so my adjustment wasn't near as difficult as a career soldier or sailor. The change is tremendous and I've talked to so many who have struggled with it. Good luck with your retirement. As we say in the Navy, fair winds and following seas. God Bless. Vince

Evets - great poem just full of courage and honesty - I am also one who lives in today - One day at a time - I've been gone a short while spending time at the cabin with my son who came back from Iraq - Nice to make your acquaintance - Welcome to the soup - God Bless, MJ

Yes live in the moment brave one! And my Mom always said "A change is as good as a rest." Nice write. Hope your home soon. Light & Love Debbie PS sorry if my politics upset you. I find it hard to flush them out of my new age brain. Hugs.
