release the dogs of war

release the dogs of war
undo their bindings
deny their wounds
delete their words

release the dogs of war
to scavenge
for the remnants
of an aching soul

release the dogs of war
from duty’s valor
terror’s trysts
furtive movements

release the dogs of war
to lick their wounds
alone
in tortured torment

release the dogs of war
into a war
from which
there is no release
