Notes About The Poem

My inspiration for this poem was simply red velvet cake:

Red Velvet

How irresistible, this sweet treat.
Complemented by a silver platter of stainless steel.
Oh, right.
It’s littered with red.

My desires, trapped in thin layers of crimson.
The taste, texture, crumbs—
Unforgettable.

Quietly setting aside utensils,
The knife feels heavier than normal.
An iron grasp on this needle of fate.

I could never replace what you took from me.
Sugar and vinegar, necessary ingredients.
Unforgivable.

Do you feel that?
The electricity in the air, aching to strike.
I haven’t felt that in such a long time.

Now it’s just you, me, and lil’ velvet here.
But before I savor this taste—
I’m going to avenge my daughter.
