Red Roses Fade To Black

Red velvet petals, only I, seduce,
With hidden danger under the disguise,
My fingers feeling shyly, I reduce,
Thorns sharpen, ready, waiting the unwise.

Before me, bleeding poison, I assume,
This flower withered, shriveled the entire,
A dark extracted substance, the perfume,
No beauty, only sorrow, I admire.

Withdrawn I wept lamenting the depart,
A rosebud, crimson, youthful, I erased,
A lifeless flower, never I impart,
nor taken with affection, I embraced.

I love your style Kelly..."I seduce... I reduce...I assume... I admire...I erased...I impart...I embrace." What a great emphasis you made with the Repetition of "I" here (good stress) and went ahead to decorate it with the rhyme; you are just too much, congrats on the win.

Beautiful, beautiful rhymes, Kelly! I also am very impressed with the iamb beat. I am rather partial to metrical poetry as you likely know.

Excellent, Kelly! Even the most beautiful roses lose their fragrance and wither, eventually. Who will take notice of them once they no longer attract by their youthful beauty! {I had a ghost poem - Shivers - ready to post for your contest, but bad weather disrupted my internet for about 30hrs and by the time I was back on air the contest had closed!} // paul

I think there will always be someone to love them, even after their beauty has faded away.... Paul, you've truly understood the message that I wanted to send in this poem. Thank you so much for your wonderful comments!

This marvelous poem has such a surreal, ambuscading, and illuminating persona...its as ifthe rose laments its fame and classic beauty and desires to punish the hastened grip and kiss of the ignorant who dare violate her..."A dark extracted substance, the perfume, no beauty only sorrow I admire..." deep enchantment...and a FAV. Kelly...J.A.B.
