Notes About The Poem

The city concerned in this submission is fictional though

the descriptions could apply to many charming cities in this world

Rapid Urban Belt - Anacreontic Couplets

Gilt-edged first light visions greet
zestful horde in trendy street
Luscious coffee bouncing bean
set alight a dormant scene
Pumpkin seeds dot fresh brown toast
eager staff cool vibrant host
Ghetto blasters rock and blare
raucous voices split the air
Backbeat sold on grey stone curb
manic newsstand with the blurb
Toil worn riser half asleep
speed bump traffic jam’s beep beep
Noisy dockland, wharf or pier
naval fringe cry, coast is clear
Blue horizon sky high quest
humdrum route dull second best
Stock exchange a whirling disc
budding Gordon Gecko risk
Rapid urban belt whose rift
spurs its city’s latent gift

Dear Howard, your animated imagery sets an urban scene that comes to bustling life. I admire "Luscious coffee bouncing bean/set alight a dormant scene" - a splendid couplet amongst splendid couplets! Your rich verses are a sensory delight and deftly capture NYC's whirlwind of "trendy streets", "ghetto blasters" and "speed bump traffic jam’s beep beep" - a poetic stroke of genius! Your "Gordon Gecko" reference - perfecto! Congrats on your fine win in Silent One's contest. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan
