QUIET MUSIC OF THE HOLIDAYS

Midnight.
Frost etches its score
on every windowpane.

Snowflakes land
with the hush of a page
turned in an old book.

Inside,
radiators hum an old hymn,
off-key,
while the tree stands
mute
in its tinsel robe.

Upstairs,
a child turns in her sleep
dreaming of
sugarplums and sleds.

The tree exhales pine,
needles brushing
the wrapped promises below.

Ornaments sway on their hooks~
tiny bells without tongues.

The fireplace crackles a low,
steady bassline
under murmured
verses of gratitude.

Footsteps soften in the hall,
carrying cocoa,
carrying sleep.

The house settles deeper into the hush.

Christmas Eve leans in,
holding its breath
between the notes.

I love this, Sara. There have been many Christmas Eves when I sit by the embers of the fire and breath in the silence of midnight like a softly sung carol. Waiting like a silent witness. Hoping to catch a glimpse of Mary and Joseph on their way to Bethlehem and Jesus in the manger. For me these are sacred and holy moments giving birth to the spirit of Christmas. Blessings of quiet joy to you, my friend along with a Christmas hug.

Dear Sara, I really enjoyed how that it’s such a gentle layering of sound and silence that makes the whole piece feel like music you can almost hear. The message I take is that the holidays aren’t about noise or spectacle, but about leaning into the hush and finding gratitude in the stillness. Beautifully done. Holiday Blessings, Dear Sara, Daniel

thanks, Daniel, for your insights about my poem. I'm grateful you could almost hear the music... :-) yes, your take is right....the 'hush' is where I feel the Christmas spirit. Merry Christmas & blessings, Sara
