Purple Heart
"Purple Heart"
We are watched
surrounded by
a great cloud
of witnesses
the race marked
out for us
our days
we count
as numbers
hidden within
our flimsy armour
our transgressions
softened peccadilloes
we are ignorant
of most wisdom
it is unseen,
we continue to read
the words, somewhere,
the end chapter
keeps us guessing
it’s a hard-edged
smoke-filled revelation
we the forgiven unforgiving
shell-shocked like ptsd turtles
heads pulled in
hiding true selves
our minds are
trip-wired
we protect
our mortality
from pulling pins
we are voodoo dolls
made of straw, safe within
our frail enclosures,
joking about ridiculous
myths that are just stories
avoiding exposure
Perhaps the 11th hour
a superstition, is approaching
closer, ever clearer, creeping nearer
we are just about full circle
waiting for the tide
to water-mark us
we wait for the inevitable
we always guess what that is
we are puppets held
dancing by strings
we are dropped by
the puppet masters
damp and submerging
shell-shocked green turtles
like shooting ducks
we are the immovable
carnival kewpie dolls
frivolous and plastic
stuck on the line drawn
evasive waiting for
cloudy invasion
at the Cross-Road
heads pulled in
hiding true selves
our minds are
trip-wired
we protect
our mortality
from pulling pins
we are the new veterans
of the unseen something
we the forgiven unforgiving
shell-shocked like ptsd turtles
ultra green, constant
in our conspiracy theories
ignoring our bleeding
Heart of Purple
always seated
in the

"What if none of it happened the way I said?
Would it all be a lie?
Would the wreckage be suddenly beautiful?
Would the dead rise up and walk?"
(excerpt, "Beautiful Wreckage", Bill Ehrhart)
