Notes About The Poem

"A Moment of Grace aka The Empty Mirror", 2024, original encaustic

Proving a Negative

The way to the heart of Truth
Is not through establishing what it is
But only by establishing what it is not;
Not this, not this, not this
And so on to infinity.

Proving a negative is possible.
It is what’s left when all the positive
Assertions have been peeled away;
Not that, not that, not that
Until all that’s left is simply what is.

Hey James, uncompromising clarity in how you turn a classic logical dilemma into an exercise in epistemological and existential subtraction. Yet in formal logic, scientific methodology, and classical metaphysics, elimination is frequently the only rigorous route to core reality. Karl Popper built modern scientific falsification on a similar insight, we cannot definitively prove a theory true for all eternity through positive verification, but we can eliminate what is false. Deceptively simple, intellectually sharp, and deeply grounding work, James. Blessings, Daniel

It’s an ancient philosophical insight and approach. It probably has some ancient Greek version, but the earliest I know is the 2nd century Indian Buddhist Nagarjuna’s Madhyamaka (middle way) philosophy that asserted the nature of reality is a “non-affirming negative”

Yes, exactly, “we can eliminate what is false”. And then be left with what is inherently ineffable… thanks for the stimulating comment Daniel.
