Proof of Love
I’ve been selfish for a long, long time
Made my excuses then excused my crimes
Didn’t know I was walking ‘long a very fine line
Didn’t see I was after what was already mine
Yes and I don’t need a detective
To go scouting around for clues
Love needs to be expressive
It can’t sit back expecting dues
Now I have all of the proof of love I need
Here at my first child’s bedside
Listening to the engine of sleep
Sometimes, love is a riptide
And I get pulled into the deep
I get so scared it could all go away
When did I start thinking this way?
To clear off a space on the carpet and pray –
To carve out a sacrament from the clay –
So I have all the proof of love that I need
It’s a hurting kind of bliss
It shatters in equal measure
Every second is like a kiss
I’m colliding with love forever
And now I’m back in good graces
With no merits and no medals
Thank you for giving me chances
I hope that you’ll never settle
Yes and I don’t need a detective
To go scouting around for clues
Love needs to be expressive
It can’t sit back collecting dues
Well I’ve been selfish for a long, long time
Made my excuses then excused my crimes
Didn’t know I was walking ‘long a very fine line
Didn’t see I was after what was already mine
‘cause I have all of the proof of love I need.
