Promises We Outgrow

We promised each other the world
When we were only five years old.
But now that we have grown,
We will take different paths.

This promise we made so long ago,
Will it, someday in the future, become real?

And alone in my room,
I find myself wondering
About the reliability
Of childhood promises.

Have the poems of ancient times ever spoken
Of this kind of romance,
Worthy of the greatest works and novels,
One that might enlighten us, the grown-ups?

Because when we are five years old,
We promise each other our candy,
Nothing to do with the cycle of existence,
Just innocent love
That, with time, drifts away.
