Promises

i don’t look
for promises
anymore
but that is not
really surprising
i don’t keep
promises anymore either
once not so long ago
someone promised
to share a thousand days
and a thousand dreams
but now the days
and the dreams have all gone
do the words i do
really mean i won’t
why is it
that promises
never last
as long
as the memories

Promises is actually the first serious poem written by me in 1974, mamma mia, a lifetime ago. Hallmark offered me $25 for it. I declined!
