Promise

What if I promised to finally give up,
Not like all the other times I said I would,
But this time truly let it all go,
If I stopped holding up this wall that keeps me safe,
I’d let it go,
Stopped holding onto every mistake you ever made,
I’d forget it all,
Stopped pretending I didn’t hear you whisper “I love you”,
And sang it back,
Opened up my heart you’ve been knocking on,
And put down the welcome mat,
What if,
I told you that you’re the dawn to my coffee,
The song to my drink,
The flow to my drive,
The sunset to my blanket,
The dance to my favorite shoes,
What if,
I finally gave up.
