Pretend Marriage
Pretend Marriage
As kids we'd chalk a house plan on the street
and pretend to be grown up families, parroting
what we saw in our parents raising us, their kids.
We smoked cigarettes and had happy hour at night.
We entertained our friends and drank and fretted.
The women gossiped and we husbands talked work.
We all grew bored and decided to never grow up.
Rain erased the chalk but we'd glimpsed our futures.
