Pregnant

She bites her lip
and looks down at her stomach
rounder
than ever before

She never wanted this to happen
She tried to be careful
She made sure
this wouldn't happen

And yet it has.

She imagines facing her
disapproving mother
who will look like she
is going to cry and yell
all at the same time

She bursts into tears
and one thought
crosses her mind

My mom's going to kill me.

And she's sure

that the small
little angelic baby
inside her womb
is thinking
the exact same thing.

Marie, Just curious, did you research statistics for the contest and then write this poem? When I reached the last line my breath left me...this is so true and it has to break God's heart. I know many women who have had abortions and the long lasting effects are often a lifelong of anger, depression, and regret. Some researchers call it post traumatic stress disorder. Again, thank u for your entry. If I could just give you a big hug for this gutsy entry. Gwendolen

I had the idea because I wondered about the abortion rate, I guess you would call it. I wrote the poem first, then looked it up, although I knew which statistic I would base it on. ~Marie
