Practical Poetics

One thing is sure;
a poet's competence is best expressed
by letting someone else inside his head.
Once there, the realms of heaven and hell
are opened up to shape
the reader's dread,
or fancy,
or delight, but best of all
to shake him, shock him,
runble, quake, until he sees
another world of fantasy
that echos down another hall
of truth.

It is the choosing, then,
that sets the type,
and reading as he writes, he plucks
the flowers of wisdom or despair
that struggle into light,
and there he liberates each one
to share with us its glory
or its blight.

And if he must, or even if he might,
his mission is our trust,
and we may cower or may delight
when any poet's inner wars
become our own as they
reciprocate and tunnel in.
Then sometimes fiery chariots appear
within the universal mind.

very well-said! i love reading poems about writing poems and you've really gotten to the heart of the matter here - "the choosing," as you put it so cleverly. nice one!

very well written, good poetry should have the power to shake and stir...I see you're new here; to answer a couple of your questions, yes it is indeed possible to private message/send soup mail on this site - beside a poet's name you will see a little envelope and soup bowl, just click on that, type your message and send :-) and on the question of erotic poems, I've written and posted several myself, some people are broadminded, others not so much, but on the whole they're a pretty tolerant crowd here...hope this helps :-) charlotte

‡ A Bit In Philosophical Terms * Never Have I Had A Desire Or Much Faith Within Psychiatry Or Anything As Itself * As For Exercising Something, Twas Already For The Most Done For Myself Many Years Ago Now * Still Waiting For Your Erotic Lessons Perhaps In Poe * Aside From My Nothing Much Self I Am Certain Many May Perhaps Find This A Most Enlightening Verse * Wonderful, My Luv, Rachel ‡

Thank you. I've been back to your page and loved it. Keep watching here, and I'll soon summon the courage to submit an erotic piece. I need to feel my way, since I do not know the level of tolerance for erotica on this site. Good crew, though. -Dean
