Notes About The Poem

Today in towns and cities all over the world, countless poor people live underground. Some in storm drains such as in Vegas, others in subways and rat infested sewers.. Children in Romania and Brazil. live in such a place, and live in fear, as many are killed by police. as they are an embarassment to the powers that be.and sport for the police.

Poverty and Depravity

A simple plank of wood
Spanning a stagnant putrid sewer
Deep under ground and out of sight
But the plank provides a bed
For a desperate poor soul
To hide in fear for the night.

And they claim the western world is civilized
But have they seen the fear and sadness in their eyes.

A man in an aeroplane drops bombs
Upon innocent children in school
If only the pilot could see their tiny faces
And the horror tears and primal screams
Of a berived grieving mums.

And they claim the western world is civilized
But have they seen the fear and sadness in their eyes.

Food production in the USA has risen by twenty four percent
They have more than they need
But still 750 million children worldwide go to bed hungry every night
And so many die before the morning light
We have food mountains stored in Europe
That are left to rot away
And decay.

And they claim the western world is civilized
But have they seen the fear and sadness in their eyes.

Here in the UK
An estimated two hundred old people freeze to death
Fearful of turning the heating on
It's a case of eat or heat for many
Families today
But the government don't care
And sadly turn away.

And they claim the western world is civilized
But have they seen the fear and sadness in their eyes.?

As I sit here writing it's so peaceful a nightingale is singing in a tree
You'd think such things can't be happening
They seem a million miles away from me
But it's sad to say
These things are happening somewhere
Everyday.

Hey Peter, stopped by for a visit. This is a great treatise on the condition of the heart of mankind. You have a loving heart and compassion for those who are in dire need of the things most humans take advantage of. Thank you for bringing it to light in such a profound and beautifully expressed way. Be Blessed, Neva

Thank you Neva your so kind you blow me away with your words and I'm very grateful we have too much choice with food we take for granted, while many have no or little choice at all, so unfair. Really nice of you to stop by. take good care. my best wishes. Pete.
