Polar Bears

Perched on the freezing northern high latitude
On the broken floating ice sheets the polar bears move alert
Looking down the holes for bearded seals for meal that may elude
Arctic ice flounders facing the climate change brunt
Ravaged bear habitat makes ground for extinction waiting to start.

Body of white fur reflecting the summer sun’s albedo, the polar bear
Entered as humanized character in Inuit and Alaskan folklore
A rare species, evolution separated them from their brown sister
Remote frozen time of Pleistocene made niche for them on Arctic ocean shore.
