Notes About The Poem

Written July 11 2026  not for contest

Poetic Growth

I love contests and hate them too
Often because I don’t follow rules

It’s all in fun I really believe that
Even if I lose its writing I grasp

I find I grow when I embrace and enter
Though trying new forms feels like a splinter

Has entered my brain caused me stress
Very rare for my poem to be the best

But looking within I can see more out
And poet friends often teach me how

To meet new goals in forms you know
I don’t have to win I just have to grow

Perfectly true. It's better to grow from the experience than aim for the best. My own feeling is I enter to try something new but winning comes from being read by fellow poets.

Love your thoughts here, Karen. I don’t mind working within some parameter. I like the idea of using close rhymes when there are not many choices. Love your final line.
