Poet Tree

The Poet Tree

Out in our back yard, When I was just a kid,
We had a tree of poems. That’s where I always hid.

High up in the branches, so no one else could see,
I watched the world go by from in my poet tree.

Poems written in the branches, and written on the leaves,
I’d find one I really loved, then hide it in my sleeves.

My mom would call out for me, to say it was time to eat.
But I was never hungry; my poems became my meat.

My friends never came around asking me outside to play.
Instead, they all gathered ‘round, to hear the poems I’d say.

I cried when that tree fell. It was during a storm.
Fearing I would not have poems to read and keep me warm.

Then one day I found a leaf just laying on the ground.
It was from my poet tree just waiting to be found.

Written on the leaf were words meant just for me:
At the bottom of the leaf it said, “From the poet tree.”

It said, “My dear young poet, remember all those years
You kept me from dying with the water from your tears.

When you hid in my branches so the world could not see,
I was not protecting you. You were protecting me.

Every poem you ever read, Right from the very start,
Must be shared with others, not locked up in your heart.

The leaf began to wither, then it began to fade.
High up in that poet tree, a poet I was made.
