Poems For the Common Man

He wrote poems for the common man,
That everyone could understand.
Gave us life in rhyming works of art.
Brought smiles that could lead to tears.
Made us face our hidden fears.
Touched our souls then led us to our heart.

He painted skies with blues and grays.
With images that danced in haze,
To songs that whispered through the winds of time.
He touched the source that guides us all.
Felt life's essence, heard the call.
Filled our glass so we could sip the wine.

I like your poem -- the sound of it as well as the sense -- and I think you have crafted a worthy and, hopefully, long-lived piece that will prod someone sometime to produce its equal and continue to be so influenced as to produce many more! Good work!

I agree, not many poets write for the common man, and too many use metaphors that are never easy to understand. They need to learn to write with their heart and not so much with their brain... That was expressed beautifully from your heart in this poem. Nicely done, Robert!

Thanks for the kind words, Kelly. Yes, there are many of the so called great poets that I have struggled to understand and have failed in my struggle. Feed my heart and I am happy. Thanks my friend.... Robert.

Hi Robert, I really enjoyed this write. A similar concept to my "Here's to the Poets" Yours of poetic aspirations while mine more on artistic appreciation. Wondering if you would ever consider collaboration with me? Not to worry, I'm not offended if you're not interested, I understand the flow of creative energy.

I'm with you in this poem. Not many famous modern poets write for the common man – mostly for their little click of elitists contemporaries. As for my poem about social security and spam, yes, spam is an all-purpose food but in my opinion it's still a triple by-pass food. Thanks for the stop by. / M

This my friend is a fine write and echoes my sentiments well. You should read the poems by Frank L. Stanton. I sent Peter and Vera a book of his poetry. Stanton wrote just as you just described, just as both you and Peter do.... Beauty and art in simplicity and wisdom in plain talk. Anybody can sling a herd of metaphors together but it takes a true poet to write without that constantly using that huge crutch IMHO. Carry on my friend, a blessing to read your offerings!

This is a wonderful comment, Robert, and I surely do appreciate it. I looked up Frank Stanton's poems and really enjoy them. My kind of poetry. I love the poems for the common man, The kind that flow directly into the soul and bypass all the clutter. Thank you so much, my friend..... Robert.

Hi, Linda. You know, I do not understand all of your poetry nor do I pretend to. I think you are a very complicated person. But, the ones of yours that I do understand and like, well I like them a lot. You have a different way of expressing yourself and to have you reading and complementing my poetry is appreciated much. So, thank you..... Robert.

The words of your latest offering, Robert, resonate with me, confirming, (at least to me) that we are of kindred spirits. I enjoyed it immensely! Jack C

Kindred spirits for sure my friend. It's nice to find other poets that feel the same way about poetry. It is truly an art and a great way to communicate. I have found some kindred spirits here at the Soup and you're certainly among them. I'm glad you liked this one. Jack.... Robert.

I did it again, Faye. Peter's reply is under your comment also. This one is written for Thomas Moore, one of my favorite poets. But it could have been written for so many poets that I can't seem to live without. I believe God gave great poets to mankind and they took there calling seriously and lovingly. I'm happy that I am one of your favorites and will try to be worthy of that..... Robert.

Hi, Peter. You know, Peter, I believe there is a great misconception about rhyming poetry. I believe there is a reason it is presented in rhyme. The rhyme and meter are a strong part of the poem. It flows like a song into the heart and soul and reaches us in a way that free verse cannot. Thanks so much, Peter....... Robert.

Hi, Andrea. Thank you so much for your very kind words. I have always considered myself a common man and believed that I am among the many. I hope to reach as many as possible with my words but I think there are many more to reach if I write for the common folk. Poetry is to be enjoyed by all. Your comment is very humbling. But, the truth is I had been reading Thomas Moore poetry and the words just came to me.
