Shine

Shine as a source of endless light whose rainbows of colour deter the night where daydreams are gentle as doves in flight and sleep the sleep of angels Shine like a shower of soft moonbeams Inhabit the sea of a thousand dreams where laughter and love are timeless themes and sleep the sleep of angels Shine like the sun in a golden sky On warm, sultry evenings, a fragrance, a sigh an echo of summer as life passes by and sleep the sleep of angels

Such a beautiful poem. I read this recently at my Grandmother's funeral - her name was also Greta - and it really touched people. I added a fourth verse of my own (hope you don't mind Greta); Shine at the centre of all of our hearts No longer together but never apart May your love fill us up at each new day start Til we too, sleep the sleep of angels

Hello Paul. I feel touched and very honoured that my poem has been read at your Grandmother's funeral. I love that you added your own verse! This elegy that I wrote for a friend's husband's funeral back in 2005, has been able to touch quite a few people's hearts, and for that, I am truly grateful. Many thanks for sharing. Greta xx

Greta, Just wanted you to know.. the first time I read this poem was back in 2005. It has since been and will remain on my favorites list. My husband passed away in January of 2010 and I have not been able to write since, but for his wake I insisted this poem be placed next to his photo collage and casket. Just wanted you to know the degree of how much your excellent poem has and continues to move me. Take care and best wishes, Michele

Hi Michele, I just read your reply to my poem Shine, for the second time, and I was sure I had replied back to you, but it appears I may not have done, which upsets me a little because your reply meant so very much to me, in fact it moved me to tears. I have never forgotten your words and they meant the world to me. I hope you and your family are well, best regards, Greta

Enjoyed your poem, it reminds me that we are like candles, (don't let your light go out). I am new to Poetrysoup.

Thankyou so much, I wrote this poem in 2005 and it's still going strong - it was a regional winner in the National Poetry contest here in the UK last year and was featured in the local press. It's good to know it is still being read, best wishes Greta
