Please Do Not Use I Know How You Feel

Frightening how fast
A mind can snap
Blubbering in grief
Inconsolable
Wailing with wanting
For the one who
Was taken suddenly

Ridiculous to be envious
of those who have had fair
warning watching their
loved ones month after
month deteriorate into
a being they do not
recognize

Mortal illness changes a family
Taking it hostage for
the length of the illness
empathetic neighbors arrive at first
but soon lose interest
not understanding the private
hell that you face
alone

When something happens that
is similar it is still never exactly the same
So “I know how you feel” is not a great
phrase to use ever, for you do not.
"I do not know how you feel" would be much better.

Caren, can you possibly recommend some poets you like on PoetrySoup? I’m not resonating with a lot of what I read. Thanks. Anita

Anita, I have so many favorites, it is crazy, I get new favorites every single day. What is it you like to read -that will help. Imagery, funny, haiku, there are so many terrific poets here. Let me know by Soupmail and I will send you some names.

Like your fresh approach to a common situation - on the outside, but certainly not on the inside “ “similar but not exactly the same”. In in the “not exactly” lies the poetic universe. Thanks. Check out the excerpted portions from my poem, The Seconds, posted today. How I deal with various postures of death in life and afterwards.

Thank you Ilene. I was hoping it did not sound too snotty, but it always seems in a way like a pat answer that does not work.
