Notes About The Poem

This poem is composed mostly of John Denver song titles, seen in quotation marks. I love that singer's songs. I learned guitar on a lot of his songs in my 40's. Then I went and forgot how to play them all.  (never try learning a musical instrument late in life unless you can practice daily without ever taking a long break!)

Playlist

“Welcome to the morning” of sunshine and rose dew.
I pick up “this old guitar” so I can play for you.
As I strum, I’ll sing my many “rhymes and reasons”
for why “I want to live” in all of “God’s seasons.”

I sing for “sweet sweet life” and the “forest lawn;”
for “Rocky Mountain high” and a Utah valley dawn;
for “the eagle and the hawk,” and “wild Montana skies.”
“The music is you!” “Let me look in your eyes.”

There’s ‘sunshine on my shoulders.” “The best is yet to come.”
To “seasons of the heart” you simply must succumb.
Hear the “train in the distance!” Its sound is a refrain.
It calls out “follow me.” Oh, my dear, “let’s love again.”

On the “Dreamland Express” we’ll go “around and around”
until at last on my guitar, I’m “pickin’ the sun down.”
With “poems, prayers and promises,” “it amazes me,”
how “some days are diamonds” when “lost in love” are we.

Well done, Andrea; one of the members here, now passed away once told me that she knew him quite well. Extraordinarily fine person and entertainer, who died too young. Brava!

He was such a talented musician, Ink. Look him up and hear one of his songs on YouTube. He loved nature. He had his own plane and sadly crashed it and died when he was relatively young, late 40s or early 50s. Hope you check him out. His music genre is between folk rock and country.

Your four rhyming quatrains weave the song titles into a warm, flowing tribute rather than a mere playlist. The guitar provides a lovely thread throughout, while the nature imagery and affectionate invitation to share the music give the poem its heartfelt charm.

Thanks. I really liked this singer. Too bad he died when he did. He could have given the world even more songs
