Play the Violin Under Water

“PLAY THE VIOLIN UNDER WATER”

it’s been said,
“Good poetry is an illusion.”
this simply isn’t true.
there isn’t an easy life,
there isn’t a hard life,
the only life there is,
is the life in between.
we poets write so we
don’t have to destroy
the world.
we write so there’s no
war to declare,
we write so there’s no
trigger to pull,
we write so there’s no
knife to bear,
we write so there’s no
hand to close,
we write so there’s no
argument to enter,
we write so we don’t
live in our anger,
we write so we don’t
live in our pain,
we don’t even write to
live in our sporadic
days of happiness.
we write to photograph
ourselves and contribute
a verse to the great play
that is our life.
after we write, there is
no need for war,
the trigger,
the knife,
the fist,
it is our argument.
like the dream catcher,
poetry holds the collaboration.
is good poetry an illusion?
no.
good poetry is the life
we were given.
