German Peffernüsse cookies image from allrecipes.com
Pfeffernüsse cookies (one of my family’s holiday traditions) means "peppernuts" in German. The cookies originated in Germany and have been associated with Christmas celebrations since the 1850s. The original recipe was created by Johann Fleischmann in 1753, and these spiced cookies are traditionally made with a blend of aromatic spices and are popular among Germans (and their descendants like my family) and ethnic Mennonites in North America.
