Perseids of Summer

*      *      *
           *
  I lie on the grass,…
  counting them, as they
  burn holes in my eyes,
  coming from nowhere,
  spiraling earthward.
  Ancient,  fireflies
  swept from the sky,
  dusting the night
  with bright embers;
  sparks flaming
  the darkness,
  each summer..
  from moon’s
  restless
  broom

  Gone
  in a
  moment,
  and quickly
  extinquished,
  while the earth
  wants to catch them,
  to no avail…
  We cannot keep
  mortal moon dust.
  We cannot collect
  the tumbling fireflies
  to keep in a jar,
  but will store them in
  winter’s memory
