Paring Down

paring down

old age
called it in
I didn’t choose
this stage
of paring down
like or not
outgrown roles
are slipping off
like oiled coats
shed rain

it feels respectful
rehearsal
for what’s coming
when every earthly
trait is freed—
so I let posts go
and watch them
fall
to someone new

clearing a place
for what remains,
the work that prods
me now
this work
wants space,
breadth and depth
to dive—
I must comply

Your Paring Down catches me in the act, although my performance feels more resistant, slightly fraught with torment. My congratulations to you for expressing yours and managing the task well.

Thank you, Amrita. Your reflections bubbling up into your words from your inner journey are a pleasure to read. You have a talent, bringing us to our inner lives. I better understand andappreciate my own inner life.

Beautifully written piece, Amrita and I find your words very relatable. Getting older is inevitable and I try to embrace it. Sometimes, it's a struggle but I intend to enjoy every moment while I am here on earth.

I like the idea of paring down. I had been looking at age as a reversal of age and right now I continue to think of myself as 12 with a body that doesn't cooperate. Keep writing!

Hi Anitra: Welcome to Poetry Soup. I do relate to your lines and, like it or not there is not much else we can do as age advances, and how quickly…I must add. SuZ
