Paradise

Paradise

Switch off the lights
Close the drapes and the blinds
Bury the sunshine
Surely , dawn shall arise
And tend to my cry

Melanin
Unique
Exceptional
Complexion
Uncommon
Of turquoise and of diamond

Black coffee
Amber
Cocoa bean

Subtle and delicate toned

Shadows
Pursue me in stride
Saying deep roots trail behind

Drenched in squid ink

Wild coiled tresses
Braided
Unto scalp
Detangled, twisted and intertwined
Kinks
Combed into a fro

Pressed
Permed
Squeezed into a mold
Silky strand
Flat
One dimensional

Insecurities
Drawn upon
Otherwise unknown

Thunder strikes
Her secret’s out
Coarse string and thread adorn the roof of her head
Clumps are shed
Broken combs left for dead

Our foremothers carried us at the hip
And were struck by the whip
Their sweat and blood
Their seed planted
Destiny fulfilled
