Pain

I know pain. I haven’t lost a parent or a sibling or broke a single bone but I have known a beautiful life cut short and I have had my heart broken. I know the pain that you feel throughout your entire body and the cold hard lump that never leaves your stomach. I know the inability to eat or the inability to stop, anything to try and cure the inevitable hole you feel. I know the whole world seems to have become a darker shade and that brightness only hurts your eyes. I know that this kind of pain never leaves you, but that you only become adapted to its continual presence. The first time you really smile you will remember immediately why you weren’t smiling before. I know it will start to only come in waves, and just as the moon that pull the ocean’s tides, you can try to fight them, jaw clenched, any distraction, but it will hit you full force regardless. You must swim with these waves of pain, for if anything it is a reminder that you still feel. And I know, we must never stop feeling.

Thank you Carol! I am quite new at writing poetry and can always use helpful feedback and support.
