Overlooked Beauty

Some think a vulture is the ugliest bird. Her red-black-eye beak looks a little absurd. Ruthless and greedy, she can make you wretch. But if you get to know her, she will easily fetch. She is big and strong with gorgeous black wings. Carrion feeder, helps with lots of things. Her flight pattern is a joy to behold. Her wrinkly neck may have a splat of gold. If you look, beauty is all you will see. She happily cleans road kill for you and me. Overlooking Beauty Poetry Contest COUPLET Written 11-05-2018 Sponsor: Jesse Rowe

Thank you Jan. I am pretty fond of "ugly" some days. They did not design themselves, you know.

I'm reminded of the dog carcass in the middle of the road, summer of 2017; they were everywhere and at least 9 of the new bunnies in my yard, disappeared that week. Poor Thumper didn't have as many this year...I suppose the The Thumper family is a bit depressed though. Anyway, everything has its purpose in the grand scheme of life. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you M.L. We had kind of a pet opossum who loved our cat and his cat food, and stopped his nightly visits this week. We hoped the opossum carcass in the road was not our pet, but we suspected it was. It mysteriously was whisked away yesterday. I like to think the vultures appreciated this poem and helped us out.

Thank you Rhona. It seems like lots of other people thought instantly of the vulture too.

Vultures, like hyenas, get a bad rap but they are necessary and beautiful in their unique way!

I love watching them in the road, getting rid of roadkill for us. It is fascinating, and they are savvy about knowing when to take a huge rip and leave before a vehicle can mow them down.

This was really fun and you are correct, there is beauty in everything, even a vulture. I watch them where I live circling overhead in it is such a majestic sight. Then to see them perched in the trees, perhaps ominous but still a thing of beauty. And yes, I do know you but what I meant was I didn't know you in the context of Kim's poem. And what's really funny, the captcha for my comment was URU. :)

URU. I love it. Do you mind if I make up a poem about that? Thank you in advance because I know the answer is yes. I love a good -looking turkey buzzard vulture!

I Love this. I was toying with writing about the vulture for this contest too. My problem is, the thousand words, I already painted this piece! I called it Black Beauty; a portrait of a Turkey Vulture bust, exaggerating equine form in the arched neck and facial features. I sold it, wish I had a picture. Good luck in the contest! :))) xomo
