Our Islands

we see the sun almost everyday
when it's not hiding behind
a thick haze
we live near tall buildings
that hide the moon
and the lights of the city
makes the sky a dark gloom
what chance have i to make it
to the beach
i'm poor and have nothing
so it's out of my reach
our birds are pigeons
not much to see
and our wildlife the rats
with whom we compete
our beauty is different
than beauty you know
our beauty is make up
and sometimes tatoos
tatoos of the very things you speak
the sun the moon
and a beautiful beach

Had to come back and read this again. City life keeps a person isolated from all the wonderful things we know of in the country. This is such a clever poem, tells it like it is and makes me glad I am not part of it.

I`m allergic to the city for all the reasons and more you describe in this poem. A super write on why they need to be avoided!

There is a lot to cosider in the gritty scenes you paint here, it holds a mirror to thoughts i have think; about many paradoxes that confront my senses and considerations, about the world we inhabit..)

a profound poem indeed which describes more than tall buildings that hide the moon.. So much pain and sadeness i feel here.. If the moon can't come to you,go to the moon!then to be poor.. isn't only misery.. Rich people can be misrable too and never know it which is worse. To be poor makes one humble enough to appreciate blessings .I'm sure if you search deeper in soul you'll find that pigeons are beautiful. and the moonless sky powerful. Its the way we see things and not the way they are at times
