Our Children

i can't stop a child from crying
although it breaks my heart in two
children will cry
over a broken toy
over a wrong done to them
i can try for a moment to distract them
until tears well up again
and, like a gushing waterfall,
streak towards earth in blinding speed-

our children are our world
each beating heart
holding unfathomable potential to make changes
on and in our earth

our children are our future
each tiny hand
capable of holding firm the reins of the future
while straddling the past and present into
something that is important and real-

our children
lovely and innocent
are born to us
helpless and dependent
only wanting our
truest love and
tenderness.
