Our Biddy

Our Biddy
by Kevin Davis, 2025

There once was a puppy named Biddy,
Born on a Monday to her mother, Lady.
She was one of seven orange pups born,
And with so many mouths to feed, her family grew forlorn.

Biddy was offered at just four weeks and a day,
And when Linda and I saw her, there was no way
We could resist adding her to our seven-dog pack —
So, Biddy made eight, and she never looked back.

Though tiny at first, she fit in our palm,
Yet carried herself with courage and calm.
She ate her fill and was quickly weaned,
A fearless heart in a body so lean.

From the start, she stole our hearts away,
Her charm grew stronger day by day.
As she grew, she became the alpha — fair, not cruel,
Teaching her pack the gentlest rule:

A bark or growl to stop a fight,
Then back to snuggles — peace was right.
She grew fast and was always near,
For pats and scratches she’d appear.

Calm by nature, yet brave when tried,
She stood her ground, no need to hide.
If others fought, she’d step between,
Protecting peace — her reign serene.

Outside, she guarded with steady grace,
Alert to movement in every place.
Coyotes and javelinas from the desert would roam,
But Biddy kept watch and defended our home.

Through the years, her love stayed true,
Her spirit strong, her loyalty too.
A foot and a half, yet bigger in heart,
The gentle queen who ruled with art.

Then one day came a test so dire,
In her own backyard — courage and fire.
She barked a warning, fierce and clear,
Between her pack and danger near.

A rattlesnake coiled, then struck her neck,
And Biddy fell — the moment a wreck.
Linda heard her cry and ran,
Grabbed a shovel, brave and swift of hand.

She struck the snake, unflinching, bold,
Then gathered Biddy in her hold.
With love and fear entwined as one,
She raced for help — the fight had begun.

At the hospital, she stayed by her side,
As the doctors worked and angels cried.
Four vials of anti-venom they gave,
To help our Biddy, so strong, so brave.

Through the night, they kept her near,
While Linda waited, full of fear.
At dawn, they said, “Come — she’ll wake when you’re here,”
But before we arrived, her time grew clear.

She opened her eyes, then closed them slow,
Fighting with all the love we know.
Through tears, we felt her spirit rise,
Across the bridge to endless skies.

Now she runs with those before,
Free from pain, forevermore.
Our hearts are heavy, our home feels small,
We miss our Biddy — the best of them all.

She was loving, protective, gentle, and wise —
The joy of our hearts, the light of our lives.
And though she’s gone, we’ll always see,
Her courage and love live endlessly.
