Ordinary Magic
This is the original version, there is an updated version on my page (posted yesterday)
I watch him across the room—
my boyfriend,
laughing in a way that makes the air feel lighter,
like sunlight dripping through a window.
His hands move with ease,
tapping the table as if they know every rhythm in the world.
Sometimes I reach for them
and I let that rhythm match mine.
He smiles,
and I notice the tilt of his head,
the pause before he speaks—
small things I’ve come to know.
When he looks at me,
the world shifts a little.
He notices the little things—
a leaf caught on a shoe,
a bird sitting on a wire,
the way the sunlight falls across a corner of the room.
I watch him,
because he makes the ordinary feel
almost sacred
He’s thoughtful,
more than anyone I’ve ever known:
the quiet moments when he checks in,
the way he remembers things
no one else would, could, or has.
Patient, gentle, careful,
he carries a kindness
that melts everything around him.
When he takes my hand,
warmth settles in my chest.
No words are needed in those moments with him.
He changes the way I feel
just by being there—
present, kind, entirely himself.
I love the small ways he shows he cares:
how he notices when I’m anxious before I do,
how he laughs at things I say that I didn’t realize were funny,
how he makes space for me
without wanting anything in return.
I love how he notices when others need help,
how he remembers and celebrates small victories,
how he gives his attention
like it’s a gift meant just for the person in front of him.
He is extraordinary,
and everything feels different
when he is around.
The way he moves,
the way he sees the world,
the way he listens—
all of it makes life feel lighter,
and in all ways, better.
I love the quiet moments too:
when we sit without speaking,
or when he looks out the window
and I watch him notice things
no one else would pause to see.
I love that I can just be with him,
and feel at home.
He is ordinary,
and yet everything in my world
feels extraordinary
because of him.
He makes me better.
He makes life better.
Just by being here.
