Notes About The Poem

(This is the 1st of a Quadriptych set of Poems on Peace)

Ordinary Hands Commit Extraordinary Horrors

Let me be clear from the beginning
any honest discussion of peace
begins by staring into the face of evil

Not the cartoon mask of villains
but the slow systematic evil

Evil that traffics children like cargo
it teaches hatred until it feels like normalcy
until neighbors become executioners

Ordinary hands commit extraordinary horrors
Indifference calcifies to stone
and thought itself
  collapses.

Marcus’s story does not end in triumph
At seventeen he was shot outside his high school
not because he joined a gang
but because he refused to

His funeral was filled with teenagers

They understood that sometimes peace
is a luxury they cannot afford

  One in four women beaten
  One hundred million displaced

Philadelphia streets— my streets
where children fear to play
rival war zones
  in their statistics

And then the litany of mass shootings
Columbine. Sandy Hook. Pulse. Las Vegas.
  Parkland. Buffalo. Uvalde. Grand Blanc.

Not distant tragedies
but the lived reality of families I serve

The young who ask me
“Why should I plan for a future
when someone can decide to kill me
  while I buy groceries?”

Children conscripted as soldiers
Women sold like cattle
Populations vanished by decree

Young men with weapons of war
end dozens of lives
  in minutes

Viktor Frankl, survivor of the camps:
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing:
  the last of human freedoms—
  to choose one’s attitude
  in any given circumstance.”

I see the aftermath
I sit with the grief

I listen
to the questions
that have
no answers

Every abolitionist knew this mathematics
Every civil rights worker knew this equation
Every protector standing between trafficker and child

They fought forces with more money
  more weapons
  more power
than they could ever possess

They fought anyway
Not because victory was guaranteed
but because surrender
  was unthinkable.

Love the wrap-up verse! I wonder why more people don’t fight for those in harm’s way but instead engage in unfruitful arguments. Well said.

Dear Kim, I hope you are doing well. I agree with you, and why don't they? Perhaps as Tennyson said about war: “Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die.” Autumn Blessings, Dear Kim, Daniel

Dear Daniel, you are deeply sensitive to the growing violence among youngsters while many are not. It is deplorable that the society or the moral system do not interfere. As long as the victims are not directly related, individuals too, turn a cold shoulder against such crimes. "Indifference calcifies to stone and thought itself collapses. " So very true. Marcus's story is not a singular example. The whole world was in shock when Charlie Kirk, 31 was shot down by a youngster of just 21. Child trafficking is another depressing issue. Unaddressed mental issues, drugs, broken families and the greed for money..... all these often can trigger such crimes. I too feel and am pained to see the atrocities of the youngsters of this generation. Great penning! Let us hope, things will improve.

Dear Valsa, Charlie Kirk, Marcus, the unnamed children trafficked and discarded… these stories haunt us not because they are rare, but because they are becoming routine. You identified the roots with precision: broken families, untreated wounds, the hunger for money that devours empathy. And still, we hope. That’s the miracle. Thank you for standing beside the poem and beside me. Let’s keep writing not to romanticize, but to refuse the suppression. Autumn Blessings, Dear Valsa, Daniel

Dear CayCay, We as poets see the world as it is and try to express our concern and healing for those things that are hate-filled. Thank you for reading one of my Quadriptych. Autumn Blessings, Dear CayCay, Daniel

Dear Anne-Lise, Sometimes when I am writing, I can feel the pain of the world as it suffers due to hatred and evil. I pray our God will intervene and bring peace to our world. Thank You! Autumn Blessings, Dear Anne-Lise, Daniel

So much evil especially where children are concerned. We never learn.

Hey Victor, It’s the kind of truth that’s too familiar and still somehow unbearable. I keep hoping that clearly might stir something deeper in us—some kind of reckoning or refusal. But like you said, we never seem to learn. Thanks for reading with such honesty. Autumn Blessings, Victor, Daniel

So Daniel, how can human beings defend themselves against human nature? The beast runs amok in too many hearts and minds. Weapons of mass destruction trained since birth to hate and destroy anyone or anything different from them. Different seems to be a big problem for people to get over. Programmed like computers for dissidence, division, and self-righteousness. It doesn't bode well for a rosy future.

Hey Randy, You really laid it bare and I’ve been sitting with that question too: how do we defend ourselves against something wired so deep? I think part of the answer might be in naming it honestly, like you just did. That programming runs quietly and early, and undoing it takes more than good intentions, it takes courage, community, and a kind of inner rebellion. I don’t know if the future’s rosy, but I do know voices like yours help keep the mirror clear. Autumn Blessings, Randy, Daniel

Daniel, your intense and courageous piece is steadfast in its moral clarity, and devastating in its restraint. The title actually sets the tone perfectly. And your lines: “Indifference calcifies to stone, and thought itself collapses.” For me, that collapse embodies the poem’s thesis. It’s the realization that we have been invaded by a “reprobate society” where good is evil and evil is good. Quoting Viktor Frankl was cool. Your work is not just beautifully written--it’s morally urgent.

Hello Mickey, That line you pulled about collapse was one I almost didn’t include, because it felt too bare. But naming it the heart of the piece meant a lot. I’ve been thinking a lot about how to write with restraint without losing urgency, and your words made me feel like I’m on the right track. Thanks for reading with such depth and clarity. This is awesome, Daniel. So much truth here, my friend. I am 20 minutes away from Sandy Hook and about an hour from Philly. Would we ever believe stuff like that would happen in our own backyards. Sad. Great writing as usual! ~Charlie

Hey Charlie, Really appreciate you sharing that, and yeah, it hits different when it’s close to home. The kind of truth that feels too heavy to fictionalize. I think part of what keeps me writing is that tension between disbelief and the need to bear witness. Thanks for reading with such openness. Autumn Blessings, Charlie, Daniel

An incredible write my dear poet friend Daniel. A great eye opener and I love what you said, peace is luxury they can't afford and the end part is great. An excellent write that immensely enjoyed reading today.. Thanks a lot for sharing dear poet friend/sir. I'll be right back to read more soon. Hugs God bless you always and your superb poetic talent.

Dear Paige, That means a lot. We also have to take responsibility for our part in it. Hearing you say the ending felt like a call to responsibility… was what I wanted to communicate. Thanks for reading with such clarity. Autumn Blessings, Dear Paige, Daniel

Wow. This is amazing. And a lot of wickedness also is planned by the elite globalists who work in secret to mold our world into something horrible. Why can't ordinary humans turn the tables,? Maybe because so many of them are wicked themselves. A fave

Dear Andrea, Thanks for reading so deeply. Yes, a lot is happening behind the curtains that feels dark and deliberate. I think part of what I’m trying to do with the poem is show that ordinary people still carry light. Oh, how urgent that tension really is. Thanks for Faving! Autumn Blessings, Dear Andrea, Daniel

Dear Sara, Thanks for sitting with the weight. O' how things should be getting better by now. I think part of why I write is to name what’s hard without letting it have the last word. Your response shows that I’m not alone in that hope. Appreciate you deeply, Autumn Blessings, Dear Sara, Daniel
