TRUE STORY
OODLES OF KITTENS
our little nest
a bed and bathroom
a place where we’d shower and dress
and i pregnant oh my and yes
and those kittens my groom has spied
feeling compassion inside
as he revs up to play the dad
he pours a bowl of milk
for his furry friends
on this date so long ago
we are talking the 1900’s
(i regress)
and besides all of this
a doctor resolves
my groom must have
his tonsils removed
as we were in the armed forces
they sent him packing
hours away
and me being just a child bride
didn’t realize how serious
this operation would be
so he leaves me all alone
and i go on with my day
marching off to pay the bills
in darkness i return to our lonely nest
where little urchin kittens
have formed a dinner line
i can not honor their request
so i rush into my safe zone
while oodles of kittens
meow and curse
jumping at the window
clawing at the door
scaring me half to death
just then the phone rings
and my groom calls in agony
so alone and far away
when he hangs up
i call my mother
and bawl
telling her of kittens
and all of my woes
