When I was young, we moved often, but then we bought a farm; in the spring at the feed and seed Daddy purchased two dozen chicks In the small pen they're placed Momma cared for them, giving them food and water They grew at lightning speed; each day roamed free One of them turned into a shiny feathery Rhode Island Red rooster aimed for slaughter He was territorially based He chased me and did kicks Terrorized by one mean bird, I feared I would bleed When in my face the spurs tender skin caught My mother saw the scene and the red rooster taught She chopped his head off with an axe, he's freed He fluttered twice, I stood transfixed Under the house he raced My mom crawled under, she did this for her daughter We had rooster and dumplings~ what a tea! I checked the spelling on my computer. I checked the grammar on poetrysoup.com. Nothing major. Congrats, Sara. In the Philippines, where I grew up, roosters are for cockfighting. The winning rooster are kept alive and the one that lost got to be cooked.

Marilene, The man that lives across the creek from us did at one time grow roosters to be used for those fights. As far as I know he did not have fights but he would ship some of his prize roosters to the Philippines. Thanks for the visit with congrats. Sara

WoW Sara. That was a mean rooster and I think the same would have happened at our house if he did that there. To bad though. Rhode Island Reds are very nice looking chickens. Enjoyed the story my friend. God Bless, JB

Judy, Yes, their coloring is beautiful. I would love to have some chickens now if I had a place fenced and a house for them. The eggs would be good in the morning for breakfast and an occasional fresh fried chicken would be good but I could not kill it. Thanks for dropping by. Sara

Sara, I like this 'One Mean Rooster' poem. They can be territorial and cocky. And a Tom turkey gobbler even worse. Better than a guard dog in some ways. -Richard

Quoth, Yes, the rooster was doing his job of protecting his flock but I don't know why he picked on me when I lived there did not bother him at all. A goose will do the same. I guess they have to have some defense. Your stopping by and taking time to comment is uplifting. Sara

You know, I have seen chickens race around for 5 - 10 minutes with their heads cut off. It's amazing. I guess their 'electric signal-systems' still work for a while. Interesting!! Thanks, Gershon

Gershon, It was scary for a child to watch that is for sure. I would not want to have to do the job slaughtering an animal. Your presence at my page is inspiring. Sara

Harry, Back years ago if a person lived in the city, they would buy a chicken on the foot and someone had to slaughter and clean that bird. I don't remember mother and daddy buying one on foot but we grew some along in different places we lived. It was a somewhat different world. My husband said his mother always rung a chicken's neck but my mother always hung them up on the clothes line and cut off the head to let it bleed out. Thanks for dropping by. Sara
