Once There Were Flames

Our desire to love and be loved, defines us as humans. Love fuels passion's flame, seducing the heart with the nectar of desire. And we fall under its spell with the innocence of a child, enamored with the beauty of a dream. Betrayal shakes the foundations of trust, causing cracks and an inward migration to the safety of our emotional walls. And we admonish reality, for the way we feel. The absence of love fosters feelings of loneliness and isolation. And like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, craving to hear the beat of his heart; we grow frustrated with the sound of silence. While the embers of yesterday's love continue to burn out: leaving only ashes, where once there were flames.
