Notes About The Poem

Yes, my friends. This is a true story. Soup mail me if you'd like further info. ~ gw

On 'Thumbing Rides'

Used to love to ‘thumb rides’
‘til in a hippie bus a classmate died

     His body chopped to pieces
~ no more need for father’s speeches

Hi Gershon, oh gosh, how terrible! Your poor friend. God’s peace for him forever. We live in a violent world. Shalom my good friend. ~

It was, indeed, beyond horrible.

We're all naive 'til the world teaches us better... My father used to give it to me for hitchhiking when I was in college -- after bragging to me for years about how he hitchhiked around the country during his 20's. Go figure. ~ gw

Wow, those speeches must've been pretty bad to drive him to such extremes. When I was 18 and 19, I used to thumb around the Hollywood area of L.A. (as an alternative to what was then called the RTD). Years later I heard the hillside strangler was active then. I was pretty stupid.

Weren't we all?! Myself, I must have accepted rides from 'Hippie-mini-buses' more than ten times while in college. Lucky to be alive today.
