Notes About The Poem

poem written based upon this image--online poetry class assignment

On the Shoreline

A bottle lies on the shoreline,
its glass warmed by the sun~
a small, bright world enclosed,
quiet as a thought the tide returned.

A lighthouse rises on its ridge.
Below it,
a sailboat drifts
toward a beach of flowers and quiet shells.

Sand dollars gleam like soft coins
the tide has chosen not to spend.
Everything inside the bottle
leans toward the open world.

I pick it up, sunlight bending
through glass, through water, through time~
and for a moment the beach, the ridge,
the drifting boat all breathe with me.

A beautifully luminous poem, Sara. The bottle becomes a small, enchanted universe, and images such as “sand dollars… the tide has chosen not to spend” are unforgettable. I especially love the closing moment, where the boundary between observer and contained shoreline dissolves so gently.🏖🍾
