On the Porch

I pictured a yard with flowers wild
I pictured a dog amongst the reeds
I pictured a tree swing and a child
I pictured a pond with swimming geese

I pictured a mountain as my view
I pictured a table rustic grained
I pictured a bed to fall into
I pictured a rug with memory stains

I pictured a mug to sip my tea
I pictured a hand that stroked my hair
I pictured the shelves with books to read
I didn’t know that you’d be there to share

I’d always known I wanted someone near
I’d always wished that someone else would hear
The crickets with me as I sit at night
And realize the dreams that turned out right
