On the Outside, Looking In

"When humanity becomes louder than love, stay out of its way. At times, it's better to be the lion in the distance, rather than the sheep losing their way...again."

This was the 1st time
I felt out of place.

Its impact mimicked abused parallelograms
Unto emptiness’ solution

I witness sliced wrists shedding bohemian smiles.

Testament verses
Latching onto anchors of invalid mo(u)rning

There was no sunrise to be found,
Because humanity kept making love to silhouetted blinders

I was surrounded by shovels
Ransacked
For the sake of digging louder messages’ trench

While I
Caress incipient wings
And half-full Windex bottles
Just to keep perception from clouding my lyrics

Because nobody wants to see eye to eye…

…

…cataract-laced speeches permeate tainted whispers
Of an innocent breath
Simply
Searching
For B-rated serendipity

Oh, this was the 1st time
I felt out of place.

Turning away from windowed afflictions
Ready
To step towards gratitude’s breath

Outside,
No longer looking in

How good it feels.

Yet, I still miss my friends.

I do love the way you write Drake. Your title brought me in. I'm on the outside looking in Little Anthony & The Imperials 1964 . I was age 8-9. ALSO your 5th line about cut wrists. I have a poem called Fireflies on that subject. I need to start reading your word more often :)

It is said eyes are windows to the soul - maybe no one wants to see eye-to-eye cause they are insecure of what their soul might look like. I absolutely loved this part - There was no sunrise to be found, because humanity kept making love to silhouetted blinders." Wow! The artificial shadows and slits of light has somehow become more precious that the light itself. What a description!

It is difficult to want to stay here, when our friends can't get along. We do our best to keep the peace and still nothing works. But, we have to stick together and just hope for better days...This is a very expressive write. I could feel the frustration and sadness coming through. Another amazing poem, Drake! :)

Moreso, the center of this "circle" continues to set rules/more rules/etc., yet we don't even know their name...who they are. Trust/respect is earned for me. Kelly, you're awesome. I seriously appreciate it! :)

Who among us, has not felt this way, I wonder? So familiar everyone must be with something as this moment. As we have grown, changed, or perhaps it is the world around us that has changed, what used to be, ...is no more.... and at first the loss may seem like grief..but perhaps instead relief that we can part and go our separate ways. I think I can relate to feeling this way more than once. This is clearly human! :)

(Whoops! I got too wordy and it made me divide into two comments) Now I revel in being on the 'outside', being different, walking three steps left of 'normal', dancing alone in the forest on moonlit nights and scaring scrubby looking campers (but that is another story) Thank you for this one!

Hi Drake, I faved this one...it resonates with me. "Sliced wrists shedding bohemian smiles" "Turning away from windowed afflictions" It feels like you were watching a long ago me and taking poetic notes. Once I realized I didn't care if I fit in, didn't understand what drove most people anyway, I turned away from observing what was only window dressing, and wandered off to find my own path. One friend stuck with me, and I found a few more along the way.

I was down this path too, a long time ago. A few aspects of it tried to creep back, but that just wasn't going to happen on my watch. HUGE HUG!

"Because nobody wants to see eye to eye" -I really like that line; it was very powerful for me. I also really like the lines "Ready/To step towards gratitude's breath"... Having gratitude is really a breath of fresh air and I loved how you crafted that. I think sometimes stepping back and looking at the bigger picture, and having a firm grasp of what's going on along with gratitude for what we have is important. That's what I got out of this anyway. Even those near and dear to us can lose heart-
