On the Edge of Forever

There is just cause to be afraid;
the time one takes to reconcile
incoming stimuli with all the
churning care within,
the nagging drive that will not die--
despite the looming dark that races
closer, hurling yesterday into
tomorrow.

It is at that point that fear exists;
the edge is razor sharp, balance
the goal that dips and whirls before us
like a drunken dervish
calling its hypnotic plea before the world.
It is a halt. It will not come.

And that is what emerges as divine--
dichotomy is ours, and all we know.
Kingdoms have engaged it, fallen,
yet the edge has proven rich
and always open--past and future
all our strength and every opportunity
to be our own; do you see it,
shining there beyond our touch?

Come.
The board is set for each of us.
The fare is glistening, the ambiance
a music worthy of angelic tears.
If there could be a paradise beyond,
then death could look it in the face--and laugh,
for there could be no ending.
(Lord! In all my stumbling, groping questioning,
have I discovered now?)
