On Reading a Poem That I Don'T Understand

On Reading a Poem That I Don’t Understand

By Elton Camp

Those lines that an author has penned
I would like very much to commend
I read it carefully twice more,
But remain confused as before

The words chosen are those I’ve seen
But the sentences, what do they mean?
Maybe the poem is just too profound
For a simple man like me to expound

Does the poet speak of himself or another man?
In his writing of it, just what may be his plan?
I can’t see coherent thought
To me, it expresses naught

That doesn’t mean the poem is no good
Only that by me it isn’t being understood
Comments that others post
Say that it is just “the most”

I am sure that true that must be
It’s just too hard for one like me
I have to seek an easier verse
With its author I may converse

Hi Elton. Love the title and the poem. I'm sure people often write comments for poems they don't understand. Maybe they're more into the community than the poetry. Also I think some poems are never intended to be understood! I'm a lazy reader - I give up if the first 2 lines don't make sense! My English teacher used to criticise me for this! Alex

Alex, if I don't understand a poem I'm certainly not going to praise it. To me, a poem not meant to be understood is a waste of the electrons it took to post it. I usually read all the way through a poem I don't understand to see if it comes clear at the end. Most don't. To be candid, I think they are simply poorly written. Others will not agree with me on this I'm sure. Elton

You hit it, Mr. Elton!!! great observation.. there are poems that is too hard to understand.. especially when it's not our own language... eventhough all poems here were written in English, there are a lot that need the help of Mr. Webster... lol..eventhough I want to leave a comment and praise the author for a job -well-done, I'm hesitate that my comment won't be good enough for his masterpiece.. .. lThis is the best poem.. and I'm faving it..cos I understand it!! oxoxo

I know what your saying Elton, sometimes I feel so out of my depth and wonder if it's just me. Take care, Richard

I really think that some poems just don't make any sense at all and have to wonder if they are driven by alcohol or drugs.

Sometimes I wonder if the ones offering praise understand it either. Some will write like that hoping the writer will reciprocate by praising their efforts. I never play that game. Elton
