On Reading a Poem I Don'T Understand

On Reading a Poem That I Don’t Understand By Elton Camp Those lines that an author has penned I would like very much to commend. I read it carefully twice more, But remain confused as before. The words chosen are those I’ve seen, But the sentences, what do they mean? Maybe the poem is just too profound For a simple man like me to expound. Does the poet speak of himself or another man? In his writing of it, just what may be his plan? I can’t see coherent thought, To me, it expresses naught. That doesn’t mean the poem is no good, Only that by me it isn’t being understood. Comments that others post Say that it is just “the most.” I am sure that true that must be, It’s just too hard for one like me. I have to seek an easier verse With its author I may converse.

Hi Elton, As I noted earlier, many of us can relate to this poem. We have authors we enjoy reading because we understand their messages. Sometimes I have to read a poem two or three times -- if I haven't gotten it by then, no comment. Love, Carolyn

Wow! Can't believe the pols abolished your board of higher education, probably either intentionally or inadvertantly tacking onto an amendment on the Bear Bryant bill. I'm a big football fan and the FL legislature is always passing bills honoring coaches, teams and players. It would cause quite a ruckus here if they dissolved a board of ed in one of these bills. Thanks for the info. Very interesting! Take care, Carolyn

Yes, this is really a problem. A lot of times readers just say, "Good work," because they don't have a clue what the poet intended to say. My poem was written for a recent contest here on the Soup. It seems you have quite a repetoire, but it would be good if you posted your poems a few at a time to give all of us a chance to read them. You're going to pick up quite a following here if you do, Elton. We appreciate fresh talent! Best wishes, Carolyn

I empathize with you Elton! I am in the same boat. I like this one though, I can actually understand it. Us simple minds need to stay together. Joe
